Dima, Dmitry, Dmytro. Glory to the Heroes emprunte des images de films amateur pour les tisser en récit semi-historique afin d’approcher la question complexe de l’identité, de la culture et du pouvoir des archives dans l’Ukraine contemporaine. 1995, un petit garçon se promène avec sa famille à Louhansk, dans l’est de l’Ukraine – occupée par les forces russes par procuration depuis 2014 -, sous la voix over adulte de l’enfant qui revient à son histoire depuis le présent. Cette voix, cependant, n’est pas la sienne et sa narration à propos de l’Ukraine et de Louhansk est explicitement encadrée comme un récit perçu par un artiste américain dont la saisie de la situation est soumise au sensationnalisme médiatique, aux fioritures dramatiques et au fétichisme personnel. Le film sape sa propre paternité et notre engagement dans son drame, tout en fondant l’histoire d’un enfant qui devient un héros dans une nation en quête d’espoir.

Dima, Dmitry, Dmytro. Glory to the Heroes uses archival footage and semi-historical narrative to weave a complex exploration of identity, culture, and the power of archives in contemporary Ukraine. The video follows a young boy’s 1995 outing with his family in Luhansk in eastern Ukraine (occupied by Russian proxy forces since 2014), while the adult voice of the child narrates his story from the present. His voice, however, is not his own. The story that he tells about Ukraine and Luhansk is explicitly framed as a narrative perceived by an American artist whose grasp of the situation is subject to media sensationalism, dramatic flourishes, and personal fetishism. Ultimately the film undermines its own authorship and our engagement with its drama, while also producing the story of a child who becomes a hero in a nation searching for hope.
