TRA est une ode au cinéaste italien Pier Paolo Pasolini. Le film footage évoque la trame narrative de Teorema de 1968, en privilégiant ses moments interstitiels. L’acte de courir, récurrent tout au long du film, ainsi isolé en exposent les courants sous-jacents. Cette stratégie de montage de détachement de certains moments, s’inspire de certaines idées de Pasolini sur le cinéma comme moyen d’engager le social et le politique. Le montage trace de nouveaux chemins à travers et entre les images. «Tra » en italien signifie « entre » et implique généralement une distance spatiale ou temporelle. Il décrit aussi ce qui se déplace « à travers » quelque chose d’autre, ainsi que quelque chose « dans » ou « à l’intérieur » du temps. Ces concepts sous-tendent le projet de TRA, celui de créer des structures narratives plus spéculatives, révisées et ouvertes.
Pasolini définit un concept de montage cinématographique comme assimilation de relations spatiales et temporelles, qu’il nomme ritmema/ unité rythmique. Ce montage n’implique pas seulement des coupes techniques, mais aussi des jonctions significatives pour l’itération potentielle des subjectivités.
« Au lieu de s’organiser simplement en une succession, un film “pêche” continuellement dans les profondeurs, dans la matrice qu’est le monde des objets… Le monteur relie les plans par des “collages”, produisant un “non-existant significatif”. C’est dans cette fraction de temps incalculablement minimale (l’intervalle produit au point de coupe) qu’il faut calculer les “durées négatives”, c’est-à-dire celles qui n’existent pas, ni comme représentation matérielle audiovisuelle, ni comme abstraction mathématique ou rythmique. Dans la convention de la durée infinitésimale d’un collage, une durée réelle encore plus infinitésimale peut se produire ; inversement, une durée immense peut se produire – une vie, un siècle, un millénaire. »

Ce qui résonne particulièrement, c’est la notion pasolinienne de « durées négatives », où le temps trace le non encore visible. Par conséquent, le temps est extrait, comprimé, étiré, bouclé, figé, etc., autant de façons de créer un espace pour ce qui n’existe peut-être pas encore. Ces expériences de durée sont souvent liées au mouvement humain, comme la course à pieds dans TRA, qui marque le temps à travers le corps, mais pas nécessairement de façon linéaire.

TRA is an ode to Italian filmmaker Pier Paolo Pasolini. The video synthesizes the narrative of his film Teorema (1968) by highlighting its interstitial moments. The act of running that appears throughout the film is isolated and deployed to expose the film’s subtextual currents. This editing strategy of isolating selected moments is inspired by some of Pasolini’s ideas about filmmaking as a means of engaging the social and the political. Through editing, new pathways can be traced through, and between, images. The word ‘tra’ in Italian means ‘between’ and generally implies a spatial or temporal distance. It can also describe something moving ‘through’ something else, as well as something ‘in’ or ‘within’ time. These concepts underpin TRA’s aim for more speculative, revised and open narrative structures.
Pasolini proposes a concept of cinematic montage that equates spatial and temporal relationships created by splicing with a ‘ritmema’ (a rhythm-unit). These splices are not just technical cuts but also significant junctures for the potential iteration of subjectivities.
« Instead of organizing itself simply as a succession, a film ‘fishes’ continuously in the deep, in the matrix that is the world of objects … The editor attaches shots to each other with ‘splices’ [producing] a ‘meaningful nonexistent’. It is in this incalculably minimal fraction of time (the interval produced at the cut point) that we should calculate the ‘negative durations,’ that is, those which do not exist, either as audiovisual material representation or as mathematical or rhythmic abstraction. In the convention of the infinitesimal duration of a splice an even more infinitesimal real duration can take place; conversely, instead, an immense duration can take place – a life, a century, a millennium. »

What is particularly resonant is Pasolini’s notion of ‘negative durations’ where time is made to trace something that is not yet visible. Consequently, time is excerpted, compressed, extended, looped, frozen, etc., as ways of creating space for something that might not yet exist. These durational experiences are often also linked to human movement, such as the running in TRA which mark time through the body, but not necessarily in a linear fashion.
