Le film de found footage OVERWORK propose une réinterprétation personnelle d’un ensemble d’anciens films pédagogiques en 16 mm produits par l’Agence allemande pour l’emploi. Des années 1970 aux années 1990, l’Agence pour l’emploi de l’Allemagne de l’Ouest a réalisé de nombreux courts métrages éducatifs. Chacun de ces films documente avec une grande précision un métier spécifique de l’époque : opérateur de machines textiles, technicien forestier, technicien en exploitation hospitalière, assistant en audiométrie, ingénieur de précision, modeleur en céramique…
La représentation du travail dans les images originales est cohérente et directe. La voix off s’accorde parfaitement avec l’image : ce que l’on entend correspond exactement à ce qui est montré à l’écran.
En s’écartant de ces stratégies filmiques univoques, OVERWORK amplifie les gestes répétitifs afin de faire émerger des dimensions sous-jacentes du travail, où l’ennui et la violence sont en tension permanente, jusqu’à l’épuisement.

The found-footage OVERWORK offers a personal reinterpretation of a collection of old instructional 16mm films from the German Employment Agency.
From the 1970s to the 1990s, the Employment Agency of Western Germany produced numerous educational short films in 16mm format. In great detail, each of these films documents a specific profession of that time: textile machine operator, forest technician, hospital operations technician, audiometry assistant, precision engineer, ceramic model maker…
The representation of work in the original footage is coherent and straightforward. The voice-over perfectly aligns with the image—what you hear is what is shown on screen. Departing from these unambiguous filmic strategies, OVERWORK amplifies repetitive gestures to bring to the surface underlying dimensions of work, where boredom and violence are in constant tension to the point of exhaustion.
