Malgré ma profonde admiration pour Jeanne d’Arc, je n’ai jamais eu l’intention de retracer son histoire, de louer son courage ni de parler de son héroïsme. Je voulais la dépouiller de tout artifice, ne laissant derrière moi qu’une figure vide et impuissante, errant dans un vent froid et indifférent.
L’Exécution de Jeanne dans les Terres du Sud n’est pas un film sur le passé ; c’est un film sur le vide – un silence abyssal où aucun miracle ne se produit et où aucune prophétie n’ose espérer l’avenir.
Despite my deep admiration for Joan of Arc, I never intended to retell her story, to praise her courage, or to speak of her heroism. I wanted to strip everything away from her tale, leaving behind only an empty, powerless figure, wandering in the cold, indifferent wind.
