The Frog is the Pond’s Witness (La grenouille est le témoin de l’étang)
Par une nuit comme les autres, un passant numérique trouve, par hasard, un dossier en nuage non crypté, contenant des images capturées par une caméra de surveillance. Celles-ci s’avèrent des enregistrements de diverses activités obscures qui se déroulent en marge d’une congrégation religieuse annuelle dans le parc d’une colonie résidentielle de New Delhi. Au fur et à mesure que le passant examine les objets, il réfléchit aux secrets qu’ils révèlent sur la colonie, aux fictions qu’ils recèlent, aux cartes d’exclusion qu’ils mettent à nu, à la violence qui a présidé à leur création et à l’étrange obsession qu’ils lui inspirent.
Le titre du film se réfère à un proverbe punjabi, « Khuaja da Guwah Daddu (‘ਖੁਆਜੇ ਦਾ ਗੁਵਾਹ ਡੱਡੂ) », qui décrit une grenouille se prétendant le témoin fiable de la vie d’un étang. La phrase se gausse de sa confiance, car comment une grenouille pourrait-elle décrire sans parti pris un système qui, en fin de compte, lui profite.

On a night like any other, a digital passerby stumbles upon an unencrypted cloud folder of images captured by a surveillance camera. These turn out to be the records of the various shadowy activities that transpire on the sidelines of an annual religious congregation inside the park of a New Delhi residential colony. As the passerby investigates the artefacts, he begins to ponder the secrets they reveal about the colony, the fictions palpable within them, the maps of exclusion they lay bare, the violence resident in the process of their creation and his own, odd obsession with them.
The title of the film refers to an old Punjabi proverb, ‘Khuaja da Guwah Daddu (‘ਖੁਆਜੇ ਦਾ ਗੁਵਾਹ ਡੱਡੂ)’, which describes a frog who claims to be a reliable witness of the life within a pond. The phrase mocks its confidence though, for how can a frog describe without bias a system that ultimately stands to benefit it.
