Riding for the Feeling
The idea for this art video came to me a few years ago when I was waiting for a subway on the upper track at Kottbusser Tor in Berlin. Next to the big clock there was a sign showing the arrival time of the next train: “In 4 minutes”.
I’m interested in how people’s perception of time is changing due to the growing presence of digital technologies. On the one hand, these technologies are a source of enormous progress, but they also create tricky challenges. One of them is our almost obsessive fixation on that aspect of time that can be controlled and measured with the clock. Due to the constant presence of digital tools that locate and measure distances in time, there is less room for other aspects of time, for example, for the qualitative duration of a psychological perception of time, which is far more flexible, creative and expansive.
L’idée de cette vidéo m’est venue il y a quelques années déjà, alors que j’attendais un métro sur la voie supérieure à Kottbusser Tor à Berlin. Près de la grande horloge, un panneau annonçait l’heure d’arrivée du train suivant : « Dans 4 minutes ».
Je suis intéressé par la manière dont la perception du temps change en raison de l’implication croissante des technologies numériques. D’une part, ces technologies sont une source de progrès énormes, d’autre part, elles provoquent de lourds défis. L’un d’eux réside dans notre fixation presque obsessionnelle pour cet aspect du temps contrôlable et mesurable par l’horloge. Cependant le développement d’outils numériques qui localisent et mesurent les distances dans le temps, laisse moins de place aux autres caractéristiques du temps, comme la durée qualitative d’une perception psychologique du temps, beaucoup plus flexible, créative et expansive.
